~ About Kitty Karn ~
Kitty Karn is known for her welcoming warmth, effervescence, and uplifting nature in her personality as well as in her teaching style. She is also recognized for her outstanding ability to help singers in both professional and non-professional capacities, in an abundance of techniques (from R&B to Opera!)
With 30+ years of teaching experience, Kitty combines traditional and contemporary vocal technique and yogic practices to assist students in not only becoming better singers, but also in being healthier, happier and spiritually whole people. Kitty is certified in all three levels of Somatic Voicework from the CCM Institute at Shenandoah University. In 2013 she became a certified Yoga instructor, which she has practiced since 2001. Furthermore, she holds Vocal Performance degrees from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota and The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas. For 15 years, she was a Professor of Voice and Musical Theatre at Western Illinois University, following several years of teaching at Sam Houston State University, Houston Community College and San Jacinto Community College.
While living in Houston, Kitty was involved in many theatrical productions, including performances at Houston Grand Opera and Theatre Under the Stars. Throughout her extensive theatrical career, Kitty has felt at home in both Classical and Musical Theatre styles as well as straight plays. She has performed in various roles such as Madame Flora in ‘The Medium’, Marmee in ‘Little Women’, Nurse in ‘Romeo and Juliet, Laura in ‘Goblin Market’ and Florence Foster Jenkins in ‘Souvenir’. Kitty has also been honored with such awards as, ‘Best Supporting Actress’, for her role as Phoebe in ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’ at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England. Additionally, under her direction, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston won Best Chorus for their work in ‘The Mikado.’
~ Kitty Karn and Michael Stryker ~Kitty is married to jazz pianist Michael Stryker, Director of Jazz Studies at University of Illinois Chicago. Like Kitty, Michael is a certified Yoga Instructor whose specialty is the integration of jazz, social issues and spirituality/faith of all types through Interfaith Jazz Gatherings in the
Chicagoland area. They have been married since 2009. |
